Those are different things.
Social Security & Medicare are government run insurance programs with premiums advanced during working years. Income tax pays for the day to day grind.
A better comparison might be would you give up roads & military for income tax.

Maybe we should...pay off some of that debt? Social Security is an insurance program, fundamentally different from safety nets like TANF. It has been paid into for a working lifetime by most in the US & factored into retirement plans. We should stop with the cookie jar raiding.

Like all insurance, it's a pay it forward system. Those who benefited but did not fully contribute are long since out of the system. It's not like those receiving are people who have not paid their fair share for a working lifetime.

It should not be their issue to resolve a governmental failure. It's the responsibility of those running the program to correct failures.
