Does the concept involve letting a registered Republican vote for a democrat in a primary? If not then you're still letting parties control who the people get to choose from.

Those are separate issues. You are talking open v closed primary. In Maine, we have closed primaries, but independents go on the ballot a different way.

Thank you for clarifying that for me. I still think that an open primary Nationwide would increase voter participation. You should not have to belong to a party in order to be heard.

I've voted in a system with open primaries before. It has some benefits. There are also benefits of independents being able to secure ballot spots without competing with the parties.
