The other light fixture (same lamp/bulb combo) on the same power strip didn't turn on...but we never use that one. I returned to power on. Alas, this mystery will survive to another day (or power outage).

It's possible for an outage to cut half of the power to your house; you have two hot lines coming into your breaker box and one neutral. Happened to us once. Two or three things on one side of the breaker box worked.
