Want to know what a day in the life of a working attorney/candidate is like?
Today's plan was to be...
Office 8-945
West Bath at 1030 (45 mins from office), quick lunch on the road
Portland at 1-430 (near office)
Mt. Vernon 615-730 (80 mins from office)

...except that's not what happened.
After hours yesterday I discovered I had not received a scheduling notice, which happens to all of us a handful of times per year. It was for an event in Newport @ 830 am. Someone involved in that case was leaving state.

Newport was suddenly a higher priority than West Bath because of the move...so I have to make a call at 8 am when court opens to tell the West Bath clerk and beg a phone appearance...except I have to leave way before 8 to get to Newport.

Newport I have to leave at least 2 hours in advance for due to road construction, and Newport is nowhere near West Bath.
Now I have a new, totally implausible itinerary.

Now my day was wake up at 4 am, email paperwork I can no longer hand deliver to West Bath and take care of urgent only email.
10 minutes to change and out the door. Kiss boys bye.
Leave just before 6 for Newport.
Hit in desperate need of tea.

Pull into parking lot at 8, call West Bath clerk, coordinate with client to make sure case is handled.
Dash into court 20 mins early to get set up/prepared.
Mediate case.
Pause at 1030, call in to other court to get a final divorce hearing on record.

Get full agreement on Newport case 🎉
...except the printer is broken, and it's 1222.
I needed to leave at latest at 1120.
And my computer won't send email at Newport because their wifi is temperamental.
Apologize profusely to Magistrate, run to car.

Sadly, no photos of Newport.
It's a truly adorable town. You should visit!
I ate warm hard-boiled eggs from Starbucks in the car instead of the highly preferable Chinese food available in Newport. I recommend the opposite.

Lots of Maine has poor mobile service. We absolutely should fix that!
I text my departure to Portland case, which I took the step yesterday to warn about the possibility of being late.
I hope and succeed at getting past the dead zone by 1.

I call in to the mediation and participate by phone until I walk through the door in Portland.
I'm a planner so I have a garage pass and employee access, saving me easily 20 minutes.
Sit down.
Email order to Newport.
Mediate.

This mediation will not settle because there is missing information.
Get as agreed as possible.
Status Conference with Magistrate.
Breathe.
Walk to car.

Pause to notice that some more weather appears to have escaped a book, including some unusually menacing but camera shy seagulls.
Hustle into car just before 4.

Head to Mt. Vernon with another caffeine pit stop.
Arrive so very early that I get to grab dinner hooray! Except Mt. Vernon is such a small hamlet that there are no dinner venues. (Seriously though, do not underestimate how gorgeous the waterfront is here)

At this point I'm more than 13 hours deep into my day.
Are you exhausted yet?
Let's pop over Readfield!

Quick bite at Weathervane in Readfield.
It's really hard to find a bad view or a bad meal in #maine.

Back to Mt. Vernon, spent a lovely hour doing Q&A in a delightful waterfront venue.
Always such a pleasure to discuss #mepolitics with an engaged group.
Back home to tuck 5 and 7 into bed, and now 19 hours in doing triage for tomorrow.

Some days are long days.
Almost every day requires juggling and reprioritizing, plus a little extra preparedness and relationship management for times beyond control...just like what you'd want in Congress.
