But for those who know even a semblance of that, you know how difficult life can be even with being surrounded by great family/friends, being loved, blessed monetarily and in health. Depression and other mental illnesses will seep through regardless

2017 was MY year and where I found a lot of my own internal answers to the darkness I held against myself for so long. All those kind things told by the ones I loved finally got through to my head and I began appreciating myself

I chose to find the littlest things to love about myself that others admired/envied that I never paid much mind to because I used to constantly tear myself apart

things like "I like how my nails grow fast" "I like my slightly-lighter brown eyes" "I like my ability to speak up" anything you didn't care for because you focused too much on your flaws!!

it can be that cute little mole you have above your lip or your contagious laugh or how your height isn't too tall or too short or being able to do that shoot dance without looking like an idiot OR looking like an idiot doing it but getting the whole room to laugh w/ you

If you're looking to help others, personally send a msg! If they are publicly in distress, I think it's better not to put your words of comfort on that public forum & reach out in more private ways. People tend to overthink what it says in front of other & won't want to open up

Of course offering a listening ear isn't always gonna to taken up by someone but just putting yourself out there as a friend that's willing to do that has always been a great first step. It's up to them to speak to YOU about it.

And if you know a person struggling with these issues, just keep it as normal as possible. Ask to binge a series together or send a meme that reminds you of them! If you're on them like a overly doting parent would be, it might have them clam up on you

While 2017 was MY year it was also where I dipped into the darkest times of my life and I still hold onto it now. I sometimes swim to the surface and get a chance to breathe now and then but I'm still getting pulled down to the sea of my dark thoughts

I've learned that these thoughts will probably always be there, that I will almost always have to be on guard. But I've learned from many others' stories that it CAN get better and while it may not be easier, there are things out there that make life worthwhile

Let's shift the perspective from "you should've checked in on your friends more or else they wouldn't have died" [blaming] to "checking in regularly still might not save them but it might just be the difference so try (:" [helpful, positive]

Also let's ease up on the "just be happy! find the positive things in life!" It's OKAY to be sad, be okay w/ your darkness. It will be there in varying shades so don't try to deny it altogether, instead accept it and try to be comfortable with it so you can get better w/ it later

While copious amounts of positivity may help /you/, it doesn't realistically help most so it's best not to shove it down people's throats. Instead offer it as a POSSIBLE solution, not the ONLY one

And hey it's okay if you decide to speak up during high-attention media topics and be quieter when it dies down. People need to stop with the "you only care when it happens" Stop trying to put blame on them and try a kinder approach. Don't shove a stigma onto it
