And yes, I'm pissed I missed the focus on that portrait!

Some weird wide-eyed richardiid flies from Ecuador. I didn't know until spotting these that actually a few different fly families have evolved this hammerhead thing. Go wide or go home!

A tiny fungivorous oribatid mite wanders around the damp underside of a rotten log. Finding macro subjects in winter can be tough - but mites and springrails are always out there if you're willing to go higher mag! This is cropped from a 4.5x f/5.6 shot on the Laowa 25mm.

Abdomen-bobbing of a female Cotinusa sp. jumping spider from Belize. (Note the palp-wiggling too!)

On a blade of grass, a prickly Oxyopes salticus waits with her forelegs raised. I often think of lynx spiders as the "other jumping spiders" in my head - maybe an unfair comparison? I sometimes even pass over them in my insatiable hunt for salticids.

A beautiful Salticus austinensis jumping spider wanders about the lichened landscape of a tree trunk in Lawton, Oklahoma last summer. An extreme crop here from a quick low-mag shot - I was instructing a macro class and didn't want to hog the salticid!

Here's an odd Ocrepeira sp (?) orb weaver I found 11 years ago. I love pulling faces out of abstract patterns - so this was an easy pareidolia paintover to show the face I see in the abdomen. A similar spider with another creepy face:

A few stills pulled from video I shot of hiking around Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in New Mexico last summer. Easy to find nice frames - the raw video saved as a folder of DNGs in sequence (lots of dynamic range but low res!)

A male Maevia inclemens jumping spider breaks down a springtail into a liquefied ball for feeding. A little soft-bodied thing like a springtail is almost completely macerated by the spider's digestive fluids and gnashing fangs/cheliceral teeth.

WHOOPS! Turns out my caption on that last tweet was totally wrong (thanks !) Spiders suck in food through a mouth/rostrum - NOT their fangs!

A little Peruvian salticid pushes back the palps of her prey. Salticids egest and ingest through their fangs - injecting digestive fluids into and then slowly sucking back in the now juicier insides. More:

A wistful-browed Habronattus pugillis male jumping spider from southern Arizona. Tried a more natural edit of a 2012 shot - check this old oversaturated shot (yikes!) up on wiki:
