If we start with Graziano's attention schema theory, a non-social animal could skip developing skills to monitor attention in others, and therefore neither monitor his own, but still have awareness of the environment, and of self-location. Does that count?

if consciousness is awareness of a deliberative process (and selection of an action path) then yes. Self awareness doesnt seem to be involved.
