Great read. The consciousness case that doesn't have input and output seems also close to intuition, as consciousness seems to associate memory elements as well as input information. And it seems to have affinity to minimum consciousness. #neuroscience

In the meantime "islands of awareness" will be found with fMRI or suitable tools. One question is: minimum consciousness is not only in "islands of awareness", but also around unconsciousness as there is no awareness area in periphery of field of vision?

When reading the title, I immediately thought of GBS/Guillain-Barré syndrome, and indeed, the article proposes "fulminant" GBS as a possible case for islands of awareness. I survived an attack four years ago and had my first lucid dream during the experience.

Interesting paper. Not being expert, I would hypothesize that trauma-induced dissociations might result in such islands (seen only after the split ceases to be 100%): input none, output subliminally poisoning the brain through the suffering-producing loop. ... ?

I bet externalism will actually be the only option available to explain when they would instantiate a phenomenal self-modelling capable of suffering. Externalism is very much alive.
