I wonder if this would support the claim that: derailment is likely to be highest when a self-salience is also high. When you're not aware of / thinking about yourself, it could be hard to feel derailed.

This was one of the things that we talked a lot about when I taught your paper! The basic thought was that you need something like the expectation of finding a robust self to feel derailed. There’s a cool link to active inference models in neuroscience here too!
