You always have the choice to go off grid. There are thousands of unregulated hermits in China, for example. Besides, all behaviour is social for social mammals. Of if not all, then most by a long chalk. Individualism is a weird modern aberration.

Fascinating article. They failed to mention Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem which indicates the potential for a beneficial dictatorship to actually enable a better quality of life for its citizens - which would pose an interesting challenge to our assumption that democracy is best.

In small-scale societies everyone knows everyone else's business and no one gets away with crimes for long. Large scale societies had to outsource surveillance to supernatural beings - less efficient/effective. Privacy is a very new idea.
