Huh, neat idea - wouldn't you want to trace only one direction per axis though? As it is, legs are dark on opposite sides in the X AFAICT.

Not really, it's not the horizontal movement that causes the cavities, but the angle you hold the pencil at vertically. What might be a good idea is to trace twice per axis, upwards and downwards, invert one of the two, and average.
