I don't know how accurate that statement about the YouTube algorithm is but if it is true there are other ways to be noticed. If I had a DIY channel it could be beneficial for me to search DIY posts on social media and give my $0.02.
I personally got onto a comedy related page by messaging a bunch of pages and offering my video to be posted. Maybe you can network with some DIY Facebook pages.
