I don't know how accurate that statement about the YouTube algorithm is but if it is true there are other ways to be noticed. If I had a DIY channel it could be beneficial for me to search DIY posts on social media and give my $0.02.
I personally got onto a comedy related page by messaging a bunch of pages and offering my video to be posted. Maybe you can network with some DIY Facebook pages.
If someone finds your comment valuable they may check you out and watch your video. If you get the right person to watch it may snowball.
