A remarkable graphic
Frontover fatalities (where drivers accidentally run over small children) have increased 3,800% in the last 30 years in the US
Whatever could be causing this?
Last weekend for People’s Assembly for Nature. The first of its kind: 110 people reflecting diversity of UK deciding on a people’s plan for nature. Independent, objective, candid, passionate, powerful. Can’t wait to see what the plan looks like when it’s published in March.
“I’ve been representing protesters for 15 years. I never had a client in prison before 2021. Now I have dozens. It is a completely new experience…a completely new scenario that we are in.” Our

This is not your usual doc about climate breakdown - it's about the money and industry ticking away in the background.
TIX:
Utah's short-term solution to save Great Salt Lake is to seal off the causeway that bisects it. The move essentially creates two lakes, one dead and one on life support.
A lot of colleagues have asked me over the past month how they can help me (apart from, I hope, becoming activists themselves!) and I just wanted to let everyone know that I have funding to support my research coming from institutions that would rather stay out of the news. 1/4
Tomorrow will be Rosa Parks' 110th birthday. She was adamant to the end of her life in 2005 that "the struggle continues" & there was much more work to be done. But too often we trap her on the bus on a long ago Dec. evening, refusing what her legacy asks of us today. A thread:
Global oil companies are reporting 2022 as their most profitable year in history.
Meanwhile, the planet continues to burn as household budgets shrink.
We must change course. The only credible direction to take is away from fossil fuels & towards renewable energy.
I have an even more egregious example.
Ask #Google how to get from Paris to Barcelona and it tells you to take 6 trains for 9 hours. In fact there’s 2 direct trains per day that take 6 hours.
Even putting in that train’s stations, Google pretends flying is 1h40 door to door. https://twitter.com/mrsamwilkin/status/1621793009799946240…
“Op een gegeven moment moet je als instituut de balans zoeken. Moeten we bedrijven helpen met de energietransitie? Ja, als ze er echt voor gaan. Maar dat doet Shell niet. Op een gegeven moment ga je over een grens, en zeg je: we moeten ermee stoppen.”
Every so often it is worth pointing out that when you update older graphs of paleo and instrumental temperatures, the more recent period stands out more and more.
to cancel membership:
Accepting money from #Shell, thus allowing the organisation and its members to be part of a campaign to distract, deflect and delay de-carbonisation is awful and absolutely not acceptable. I want no part of it.
Good to see this being called out. I would have included economics in the broadest sense. Endless growth at all costs is madness.
UN head accuses fossil fuel firms of business models ‘inconsistent with human survival’
And this is why placing PV on roofs results in far fewer conflicts.
Our paper shows that just on roofs the globe could produce ~ as much power as today's total global power demand

Als je 38 miljard winst maakt met vooral olie en je zet de rem op investeringen in duurzame energie, dan doe je niet eens meer je best om te greenwashen.
To understand some of the key reasons the global community has failed to bend the emissions curve away from its rising trajectory, this multi-authored paper may help; it also points to a potential route out of this impasse. https://annualreviews.org/doi/pdf/10.1146/annurev-environ-012220-011104…

Climate change poses significant health risks
But many MPs aren't aware
It's vital that our leaders are clued-up to reduce the strain on our NHS
Please help

Let's make this very plain ANY new oil and gas exploration is incompatible with our climate targets!
Most existing fossil fuel reserves need to remain in the ground.
The public deserves to be informed of this by
After an interview I did with a Just Stop Oil campaigner I’ve been accused of being a “climate denier” & “green gaslighter”. I challenged her assertion that “EVERYONE agrees that “OUR govt’s decision to pursue new oil is a death sentence for millions around the world” 1/6
examined the remaining production rights that compatible within our carbon budgets in this paper.
Their conclusion? "Rich countries must end oil and gas production by 2034" 8/n
Put together current projections for fossil fuel production are totally incompatible with our climate targets & show how hollow the promises made by governments
Our 2021 #ProductionGap report is out!
Two years on, with the climate crisis clearer and more urgent than ever, governments’ planned fossil fuel production remains dangerously out of sync with #ParisAgreement limits. http://productiongap.org
A brand new blow to the case for new oil & gas extraction in the UK:
The UCL team behind last year's landmark 'Unextractable Fossil Fuels' paper has concluded that the development of new oil and gas fields and licences in the UK is incompatible with the Paris Agreement

"shows that producing & combusting the world’s reserves would yield over 3.5 trillion tons of ghg emissions, over 7 times the remaining carbon budget for 1.5C" !!!

WG3 report from this April, signed off by all world governments, is the plain truth that meeting even the 2C climate target means the majority of fossil fuel reserves become stranded assets #CarbonBubble 4/n
