As certain world leaders say we shouldn't heed the negative warnings of climate activists, I wonder, what do 11528 climate scientists have to say on the matter, as recently as this month?

A really important read about care-giving as an academic, which I relate to so much of. Hope we continue to have supervisors who uphold an accommodating culture like Luke's:

“But we need a backup planet in case this one is ruined!” There is virtually nothing we — or the Universe — could do to Earth that would make it less habitable than Mars. Global warming, nuclear winter, extinction-level asteroid... still easier to live in caves here than there.

The ironic kicker for me is, if any of this happened in a screenplay, or a book, I'd call it lazy and contrived writing. Maybe I'll be more forgiving of random coincidences in fiction from now on... n/n

She says she'll relat this guy's kind words back to , he hits his stop and gets off. She mentions before he goes, it's the first time she's run into someone reading the book outside of a work context. Out of all the places they both could have sat! 4/n

Not only that, she's just on her way back from his *place*, the author of the same book this guy is reading. And he (and I) are completely dumbfounded by the coincidence and amps up the praise (naturally). They chat a little about storywriting for a bit 3/n

This woman has sat here by total chance by the way. He's like "Yeah, it's pretty good so far" etc and this woman, having listened to him for a bit goes on to say "Oh, that's a relief. I work at John Yorke's consultancy, we run the company together." 2/n

Oddest thing on the Tube a few days ago. Gent sat next to me, lady on the other side of him. He's reading "Into the Woods", a book on storytelling by acclaimed screenwriter John Yorke. Lady, evidently a stranger to him, strikes up convo to ask if he's enjoying the book. 1/n

Swedish clinical trials used to be wild. Enjoyed this fun little (potentially apocryphal) quip from Swedish history and the debate over coffee consumption 300 years ago:

I know I don't read enough but every year, through sheer cultural osmosis, I find another reason to like him and his opinions. This year's reason came early:

What men in positions of power seem to apologise for, and what they actually did to lead to them being publicly called out are _very_ different things. And it is that gap we need to be mindful of when our colleagues of all genders experience harassment and need our support.

A fantastic talk by Celeste Kidd, but if you're time strapped watch just 5 min from 25:30 onwards where she addresses the fear some men have that a minor social stumble with their female colleagues will lead to an exaggerated claim of sexual misconduct:

Great food for thought here. A lot of the debate on "AI Ethics" is a bait and switch for corporate interests. Sometimes the the "fairest" way an algorithm can be implemented is simply not at all.

Powerful words from fellow Hilda's alumna Francisca Mutapi on the need for African-led health research. Glad to know that is engaging in strong co-productive activities to bridge the gap between Western and African research.
