When it comes to choosing a grad program, the people are just as important (if not more so) than the research. The mentoring you receive and relationships you build during grad school are key to launching your career, and the research is a vehicle for that.

Platforms for rapid sharing like and do basic screening, but we DO NOT peer review. So sharing is faster than in journals but will have more errors. On the other hand, spotting errors and fixing mistakes is also quicker with us. 1/

Here’s another moment when western blot defeats you. Me: I run a damn good SDS-PAGE and western blot. Actin: HOLD ON THERE, CHIEF. I AM NOT WILLING TO COOPERATE TODAY!

You want the outcome of your PhD to be more than a book full of experiments. Your grad experience should equip you to be a leader, communicator, and independent thinker. It should help you envision your future career goals and give you the skills needed to pursue them.

🚨NEVER IGNORE THE DATA.🚨 Here a story of how I did ignore it and lost big: A couple of years ago I was wrapping up my postdoc at the . I was trying to establish a system where I isolate gfp-tagged ribosome from transgenic mice. /1

Success shouldn’t have to come at the cost of your health, either mental or physical. That’s it. That’s the tweet.

The deadlines never end. As soon as something is submitted, another deadline is waiting to replace it. If we stress out about deadlines, we’ll always be stressed. I’m learning to plan out how and when things will get done and then let go of the stress. Not perfect, but better.

On the existence and functionality of topologically associating domains [review by Jonathan Beagan & Jennifer Phillips-Cremins]

The structural features of topologically associating domains. a–d, Heat-map representations (top) and schematized globular interactions (bottom) of TADs (a,b) and nested subTADs (c,d). e, Cartoon representation of different classes of contact domains parsed by their structural features and degree of nesting. f, Identification of contact-domain classes from e in cortical neuron Hi-C data, binned at 10-kb
g, Cohesin translocation extrudes DNA in an ATP-dependent manner into long-range looping interactions that form the topological basis for TAD and subTAD loop domains.
h–k, Contact frequency heat maps of high-resolution Hi-C data, performed on embryonic stem cells (ESC, h,j) and neural progenitor cells
(NPC; i,k). h,i, Green arrows denote the corners of a subset of the nested chromatin domains
a–c, Schematics of three emerging mechanisms through which loop domains can influence transcription: direct, strong contact of enhancers and promoters via persistent loops (red arcs) at the corners of domains (a), transient, weak contact of enhancers and promoters via transient loop extrusion (blue arcs) across the loop domain (b), and developmental miswiring of enhancers to non-target promoters outside of the TAD...
f, Depiction of a model of long-range transcriptional regulation in
which an enhancer’s regulatory contribution trends with its activity signature and Hi-C contact frequency with the target gene. i, Cartoon of unencumbered development observed after perturbation of a TAD boundary opposing the Shh gene

How do we achieve a cure for herpes? Problem: once herpes simplex virus (HSV) becomes latent in neurons, they shut down virus protein expression and become invisible to the immune system. The virus can hide in neurons forever, reactivating and causing painful skin lesions. 1/n

I FOUND A SUPERNOVA!!!!! I FOUND A MASSIVE STAR THAT EXPLODED ~10 DAYS BEFORE I OBSERVED IT!!!! AAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!! from its spectrum we can measure the expansion rate of the Universe, propelled by dark energy. AAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Well, this is very concerning. Why would Netflix promote a pseudoscience-based company that actually causes harm? How about creating good content instead?

I scanned 675 papers from one journal and found about 15% of them to contain image duplications. That is the highest percentage I have found in a journal.

If you work in research, you’ve probably never met another researcher who doesn’t fear failure or feel the sting of rejection. You’ve just met a lot of people who prefer not to talk about it. Vocalizing our fears and struggles is a powerful first step toward overcoming them.

Glad to see that did the right thing and retracted this paper. The authors used the excuse that a third-party lab constructed most of the figures, but the journal still held the authors accountable. Both authors did not agree with retraction.

I was really hoping to see a mindfull approach to gene editing, but this experiment "reads like an experiment in search of a purpose, an attempt to find a defensible reason to use CRISPR/Cas9 technology in human embryos at all costs"
