I started down a similar path a few years ago. Looking at top tens albums in 1980s. Then checking to see if it was 1st 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc album. Never finished but it seemed obvious WAY less 1st, 2nd albums hitting weekly top ten now!

2/x There’s a caveat and a control variable. The “eventually popular” artists self release first couple albums now. But it still *seems* like there are fewer new artists/freshman artist breaking through. Suggesting perhaps a stronger “gatekeeper” effect nowadays.
