The temple is this life we share. Your heart is the precious treasure. And the teacher is found in every moment in which we look inward and ask, “What’s it like to be me?”

Just sit very naturally and breathe ... Whatever’s in your head is okay. Just breathe ... Whatever’s in your heart is okay. Just breathe ... Whatever you feel in your body is okay. Just breathe ... You, just as you are, sitting here breathing, are okay. Breathe ...

We owe so much of our exposure to eastern spirituality to Ram Dass. I sat my first retreat with him. It’s where I met . And so many loving memories of subsequent retreats on Maui. His practice wasn’t mine, but my heart is full of love today and that’s Ram Dass.

Letting go isn’t about giving up or not caring. Instead it’s a question of “how much?” How tightly must I cling to my worries? What might happen if I released my stranglehold on life? And what if I breathed? Or if I allowed life to breathe me? What would it be like to be me then?

Pause and take a minute to breathe. No need to add or subtract anything from your experience. Allow it to be very simple, very easy, very natural. Just you, breathing, present to this moment of your life. You, as you are, in your life, as it is today, are enough. Breathe ...

Fall is here. Pause a moment and take it all in. Days grow shorter, leaves transition from green to gold, afternoons go from warm to cold. Life is splendid and alive, and you are part of all this too. Nature’s vibrant beauty includes you. Breathe ...

The rising sun announces a new day. All of nature begins again. Ease your grip on your worries. Let go of what you can. Breathe the morning air deep into your lungs. Place your hands on your heart and whisper gently: May I be safe. May I be loved. May I be filled with peace.

For just a moment imagine that the sunflower swaying in the wind is saying hi. Or that those noisy squirrels really just want to have a chat. Wonder aloud if the birds might be singing their tune just for you. How wonderful life can be when we let go and allow a little magic in.

Our practice is to love even when it’s seemingly impossible... to meet hatred with an intensity of love that’s fitting of our intense times.

Find a big question. Like “who am I?” or “what’s life about?” or “why do amaryllis touch me so?” Live with it, take it to work, eat lunch with it, rest with it on your pillow at night. Whatever you do don’t answer it. For just a while, allow life to be larger than your knowing.
