Notes to self for the New Year: - Breathe deeply (as often as you can) - Slow down (as much as you can) - Accept and let go (of whatever you can) - Be kind (to everyone you can, inc yourself) - Forgive yourself (when you forget any of the above) - Breathe and begin again...

Tenderness can be a byproduct of meditation when, as we sit and become intimate with our own pain, we see that it is a tie that binds us to one another. Once we understand we’re all suffering, our hearts soften and we can begin to see each other with gentle eyes.

I’ve been thinking about Kobe. About how life doesn’t listen to our plans and dreams of how it should unfold. About how mysterious and tenuous and painful it can all be. This is something I wrote along those lines. It seems appropriate this week. Big hugs.

When we have really met and known the world in silence, words do not separate us from the world nor from other men, nor from God, nor from ourselves because we no longer trust entirely in language to contain reality.

One of the hardest things to do is to see ourselves in others, to recognize the humanity around us. When we find ourselves stuck in judgement we can ask: “what would have to happen in my life to cause me to behave like this person I’m judging?” This is a step toward compassion.

There are tender hearts everywhere - inside ourselves and inside others. Obscured by worry and fear, stories and conditioning. Our practice in meditation is to drop into this gentle place. Our practice in life is to connect through that space with the tenderness of others.

“Is it safe to relax now?” So often we hold stressful thoughts, memories and body language even when there’s no actual threat. Check in with yourself now. Is it safe to take a deep breath? Let your shoulders fall? Relax into the moment? If so, be here now - breathe and let go ...

"We’re good at superficial labels. We call each other tough, angry, difficult. Below the surface though is always more. We’re alone, afraid, longing to be loved. We need the courage to look deeper, to find our common humanity." ~ '

We tend to believe that what we’re experiencing is a mistake, that our lives are a mistake. Meditation is a moment in which we sit with ourselves, with our lives, with the contents of our own hearts, without arguing with what we discover. That’s the peace we’re all searching for.

Compassion doesn’t say, “I’m with you because I pity you” or “because I feel sorry for you.” Instead the message of compassion is an acknowledgment of our shared humanity. It says, “I’m with you because I am you - I recognize you in me, and me in you. And we’re in this together.”

Meditation can be very simple - simply sitting, simply breathing, simply paying attention to the experience of being you. When we feel we’ve failed or can’t do it, we’re adding some rigid rule that doesn’t belong and we can breathe, let go and just be very natural with ourselves.

“You understand from spiritual practice that your task is to show up anyway, even if the outcomes are not at all what you hoped for. You just show up with love and tenderness and a spaciousness to hold what is.” –

Go to the place inside that hurts. The part that’s lonely or sad. Your broken heart. Your bruised ego. The part of you that worries it will always be this way. Go there now and silently repeat: May you be happy. May you be safe. May you be filled with love. You’re not alone.
