I sincerely applaud and for being pioneers in their respective fields and for their attempt at appyling an evolutionary-cognitive approach to folk-economic beliefs. 10/End

This paper is quite long, primarily due to the introductory Part 1. After some discussions with the reviewers, the editor decided to keep it in. But for people already familiar with EP, CAT and DIT, Part 1 can be skipped. Part 2 is where the real action happens. /8

Enter DIT, which - with its focus on social learning - is much more flexible in scope and therefore better able to explain e.g. cross-cultural variation. DIT also relieves us from being too reliant on the controversial assumptions of EP - namely massive modularity and the EEA /7

Another problem for the FEB hypothesis: There is great variation in both economic beliefs and behavior cross-culturally, much of which is in strict contradiction with the predictions of the FEB hypothesis. So we need something else and something more /6

In the paper, I argue that the strong reliance on EP is problematic, since the core assumptions of this framework - i.e. "massive modularity" and the "EEA" - has become increasingly controversial, and I lay out empirical work that is inconsistent with EP's core assumptions. /5

According to the FEB hypothesis, such beliefs are constructed on the basis of our evolved psychology, e.g. modules for "cheater detection". As such, the FEB hypothesis relies heavily on the frameworks of (capitalized) Evolutionary Psychology (EP) and Cultural Attraction Theory /4

Examples of folk-economic beliefs according to the FEB hypothesis: "immigrants “steal” jobs" (e.g., immigrants compete with native citizens for work) and "immigrants abuse the welfare system" (e.g., immigrants are “lazy” and scrounge on hard-earned tax money). /3

This approach - which I coin the "FEB hypothesis" - essentially states that certain beliefs (i.e. folk-economic beliefs: beliefs about economics and policy issues held by lay people) are particularly prevalent, because these beliefs resonate with our evolved psychology /2

This paper represents a humble attempt at introducing Dual Inheritance Theory (DIT) into political psychology. It does so by critically discussing a recent evolutionary-cognitive approach to so-called "folk-economic beliefs", laid out by and /1
