After following parallel stories of ISIS brides Shamima Begum from the UK and Hoda Muthana from the US (among other Western ISIS brides who want to return to their country of origin) for the past week, here are my thoughts:

1. It is hard to believe that any of them feel genuine remorse- given ISIS is now defeated and they have no other choice than to beg for forgiveness from their home countries. They were there for four years.

2. This is one of the differences between them and ex-ISIS who chose to leave before ISIS was defeated. No doubt many of them are still a threat (all 8 returning Americans were taken into custody) but their expressions of remorse and regret are more believable.

3. Comparing Shamima Begum to Hoda Muthana, Hoda has expressed more remorse in her interviews. However, the evidence against Hoda seems far more damning, given her history as a social media influencer for ISIS and her tweets calling for terrorist attacks in the US.

4. I understand why the British public support revoking Shamima’s citizenship, given lack of trust in the ability to prosecute and monitor Shamima and the ongoing security threat (Manchester, etc). The idea of ex ISIS fighters running around unmonitored is scary.
