The said reasons for not going with HE are really... yeah... not quite comprehensible if you take a look at existing playable races like Nightborne, Pandaren and especially Void Elves.

Technically, blood elves are high elves. It was Kael'Thas that renamed them after the scourge attack on Quel'Thalas.

Technically, Nightborne are Night Elves. And still they differ. Same goes for Blood Elves vs. High Elves.
