some people don't want to actually follow artists and want to just join for giveaways when they reach something like 500 followers, 1000, etc. So they jump off when they notice the artist doesn't post anything about their internet points reaching significant human number
People really spend effort on checking those numbers to un-/follow? Jeeez. So much brain juice wasted...

some have bots / apps that follow everyone so the person will follow back and then unfollow them to make their ratio look higher than it actually is, it's wild how much people care about that.
