Not in the cards.... yet. There are ways to allow xfaction gameplay, but mechanically and canonically, in a way, keep the two-faction system.
Yet? Ion sounded very clear that this is not an option at all, didn't he?. Like he said sth in the sense of it wouldn't be WARcraft if there wasn't the distinct factions. Which is sad. And I don't agree on. Did I say it's sad? :/

He said they're not in the cards. I took that as a ni for the foreseeable future, but you never know how things can change. It also sounded like it was more of a mechanical issue rather than a lore/storytelling issue.

There can still be two distinct factions without those factions being Alliance and Horde. There can even still be PvP with no factions lorewise, where PvP is just it's own thing. More so than it currently is.

Imagine, when you opt into Warmode or queue for a BG, you select which faction you want to side with while engaged in PvP activities.

This would also free up BGs and Arenas from being strictly AvH. We could see BGs but with other factions like Ebon Blade vs Silver Hand, Black Empire vs Titanforged. Ancient Kalimdor vs Legion, etc. You pick a side when you queue up and then hop in. Simple as that.
