    Clathrus ruber or ‘red cage’ initially appears as a whitish ball or 'egg', the cage-like form of this fungus becomes visible once the outer membrane of the egg bursts.

    Happy Halloween! In honour of this spooky day, we’re sharing some freaky fungi RHS Members have spotted in their gardens. This ghoulish-looking fungi is Devil’s fingers fungus (Clathrus archeri) which emit a foul-smelling odour from the sticky slime they exude.

    See how the team at readies glasshouses for winter. Use garden disinfectant to destroy red spider mite eggs, other pests, and spores on the cleaned surfaces. Clean plastic greenhouses, frames and polytunnels the same way but more gently.

    A good clean of the greenhouse can reduce numbers of overwintering glasshouse red spider mite, glasshouse whitefly and other glasshouse problems. Cleaning now can save problems in spring. Find out more about glasshouse whitefly here:
