Games have undeniably changed in the past decade. But they're still rooted heavily in achievement, competition, and showing off. From high scores to fighting games to speedruns, it's part of the culture, specially on Youtube. It's why Dark Souls took off ultimately.

You need your person who can beat a Soulborne game or competently cover sports sims, sure, but with other games getting more and more into "big idea" territory, and the industry itself breaking into the mainstream, you need great reporters and critical thinkers too.

I think some elitists forget that the best gamers can also be horrible writers. I mean, I tried watching some streams and they can't even form a coherent sentence.

A lot of people, in my experience, don't recognize that games coverage takes two proficiencies, gaming and language, and the latter's a lot less common than the former. You're usually gonna be better off with a good writer who's an average player than the other way around.
