my DICE schedule is starting to populate but I still got some room. GDC is an open book. yell my way. as a heads up I'm pretty focused on reporting and interviews, so largely won't be taking preview opps this year, but I can send you to the right person at IGN for that if needed

I'll be at both DICE and GDC this year and would love to have interesting interviews and interesting non-interview conversations. Let me know if we should be talking!

Watching Andor right now and now whenever anyone asks me about my career I'll say "I've made my mind a sunless space. I share my dreams with ghosts. I wake up every day to an equation I wrote 15 years ago from which there's only one conclusion: I'm damned for what I do."

New on : I interviewed Xbox CEO Phil Spencer () on this week's Developer Direct, the recent layoffs, E3, Activision Blizzard, 2022 being "too light" on games, and what 2023 means for Xbox as some major releases prepare to roll out.

There have been reports that Xbox will be at E3 2023, but that remains unconfirmed. All Xbox has announced is that there will be a showcase event in Los Angeles, which could be similar to what took place last year. E3 wasn't referenced and everything else is speculation.

Nine Princes in Amber is very good, actually

Oh hey, one thing I forgot to add with this! We're hoping to do a lot more original entertainment reporting now that we've got someone (me, it's me) dedicated to it. You can email astedman@ign.com with tips or DM for Signal, and, in general, my DMs are open.

WaPo gutting launcher and the NYT doing "video games: more than just for kids?" on the same day, when a video game adaptation is one of the most high profile prestige dramas on TV atm, feels like a stupidly out-of-touch view of games' importance to mainstream culture reporting

WaPo is sunsetting its games vertical the same day NYT publishes another classically 🙄 line on gaming: "Until fairly recently, games were considered a niche hobby, typically associated with children." Infuriating that games coverage remains low priority at these prestige outlets

I buried the lede, which Dan has covered! We will indeed be replacing me! I know there are tons of talented editors looking for work, so please feel free to reach out with questions.

Alex has been an absolute machine for the past year and a half, cranking out great movie & TV reviews like no one I've ever seen! She'll be sorely missed, but I'm glad she's not going far and will still contribute reviews. And yes, this means a job posting will go up shortly. twitter.com/a_sted/status/…

Spoiler: That one scene in The Last of Us: Partner pointed out that it was more like mother birding than a kiss. Who knew that getting infected by a fungus zombie was supposed to be disturbing 🤷‍♀️ But I can already see where all this discourse is going.

Movies opening on 9/26/2003 -- the day the cordyceps fungus arrives in the US -- included The Rundown and Under the Tuscan Sun, and for me, personally, Under the Tuscan Sun would be a great last movie to see before becoming a fungi monster.

If HBO’s The Last of Us’ apocalypse started in 2003, that means they never got to see Shrek 2 (2004). They may be surviving on that show, but are they really living if they haven’t seen Shrek 2?

2014: Land at USgamer thanks to Jeremy Parish. Actually manage to stick in the job for a few years. Promoted to EIC in 2017. Shuttered in 2020 because we were owned by an events company and a pandemic was on (among other factors). At a certain point I just wanted some stability.

2011: Go to GamePro. It’s a dead magazine walking but we have a great year in traffic. We think we’ve done enough to buy us another year. Website shuttered that November. Freelancer for another two years after that.
