Instead of asking what your job is, i tend to ask what your goals are. I respect people who know what they want to do with their lives, not what they’re currently doing. They might not be where they want to be just yet

I don't think a person's job accords them respect. Disrespect, either. It's about who someone is as a person, and jobs don't always reflect that. Sometimes, a job is just a means to an end. And this is probably why I'm unpopular. I can't grease the social wheels.

In France it's considered very rude to ask someone what their job is. I guess they know about this reason you mention.
