From an evolutionary standpoint, depression is probably the worst thing humans could have developed.

Actually no. Depressed people had more chance to survive horrible situations like the Holocaust and slavery. They didn't waste energy fighting, but accepted their destiny instead. So apparently it has an evolutionary sense.

So sitting around and doing nothing is better than fighting and TRYING to survive?

In some cases, yes. Think, for example, of these cases where kids were chronically abused by their parents. They don't have the strength to fight back, but they can learn to become "invisible" and survive the abuse.

How do they become "invisible?" and invisible in what context? Regardless, they are knocking on deaths door by not even having the initiative to survive. I think some attempts at survival is better than nothing. Better to die trying than to die a poor unmotivated bastard.

I think he's saying that those who had the will to survive died off in the fighting while those who simply accepted their fate got to live on.

I understand but a lot of people were never going to leave the camps no matter what. In these situations you would die eventually in a restricted place. Die fighting is what I say.

I agree with you. But most uprisings ended badly: https://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10005407 … There was a psychiatrist, Viktor Frankl, who wrote a book called Man's Search For Meaning, where he speaks about his experiences in a concentration camp. I highly recommend it.

Psychologists say that every emotion is useful for something. I am waiting for them to say what is the use of depression.

You mean conscious realism? I think the internet might compete. Gives people a false worldview. The internet does not induce culture, it destroys it.

I don't believe it was "developed." Each person falls into it on their own through various circumstances.
