I’m disappointed in our ancestors for never domesticating bats.

Our Ancestors tended to domesticate animals that would be the most useful, practical and easy. Bats don't meet any of that criteria (except maybe easy?) but with domestication, it's all or nothing. Still would have been cool though

They’re very useful in crontroling the bug and small rodent population. Especially bugs.

Didn’t early humans already have cats for that?

For rodents, but not bugs. My cats will crunch the odd bug, but for the most part, they just ignore them.

So bats were already doing humans a favour? I guess they then didn't need to domesticate them

Touché. But can you imagine if we kept them in the house? We’d never have an issue with bugs inside.

Yeah. And I assume if it were easy enough to domesticate them (like if they had a family structure humans could work off of), then they'd be a great natural anti insect

It’s actually frightfully easy to domesticate them. It can be done in a few hours, really. Bats are crazy friendly and they really love people.

If they did domesticate bats then we wouldn't have Batman.

You seem like the person to try that and see first hand why no one else tries to demesticate bats.

Right? We had a partly domesticated one living by our back door and we had fewer bugs in the house in the years he lived there. And I was even brave enough to reach up and scratch behind his ears a couple of times. They react just like cats do.
