It’s no wonder people who aren’t depressed always say “stop being so depressed.” It’s not a choice, it can be crippling to one’s entire life and those around them

It's a mental illness and people need to realize that. It's not a choice, or a fun road to go down.

Or like it's something that will pass in a few minutes, or by hearing a compliment, nice words, offering to take you to lunch will make it all better. My depression is me feeling how most feel on really bad days buts it's my norm. And my best days are most peoples average days..

Personally I hated living with depression so I did sit down in my room and analyzed my situation and I chose to stop being negative and hopeless. I ate healthier, joined a new sport, & focused on school. You always have the choice to make your life better.
-
When you choose to think positively and actively make a change to overcome it, it changes your entire outlook on life. No matter how "hopeless" your situation is. You can dig yourself out of the hole or stay stuck feeling sorry for yourself. Your choice.

It’s not as easy as flicking a switch though, which I think is the point the original post is making. You have to work at it, to be able to pull yourself out of the depths, I’m sure like me you you didn’t achieve this all in one go. X

Yeah it took a while, I just wish people wouldnt be so pessimistic when they don't have to be. Making the choice to get better is easy, doing it takes time and effort.

It's not a choice, we don't choose to be depressed it's something that happens that we can't help and saying "get over it" and "cheer up" won't help at all but It will make me dislike you more

It’s definitely not a Choice. Depression is a daily struggle. Even taking medication it is not a guarantee that you will feel great
