I've been laying in bed thinking about it for the past five minutes

The "c" because its the word "scent" not the word "cent". If it was the word "cent" then its a different word. Simple English

the s. It comes from the Latin word "sentio, sentire" which means "to feel or to perceive." The c is to distant it from cent.
