Harry Potter’s foster family was probably so terrible because they lived with a horcrux in their house for 12 years.

Nah they were horrible to Harry as soon as he arrived as a baby and even before when they found out about Lily's pregnancy. So this might have made it a little bit worse but it doesn't change the fact that they're little shits when it comes to Harry.

Yeah, but if they lived with a horcrux for 12 years and he went to Hogwarts at 11, that means they had it with them for a year before he even showed up

Harry was brought to the Dursley's at age 1. He went to Hogwarts at age 11 which means he's been constantly living with them for only 10 years. Nevertheless he came back for at least a short period of time during his summer holidays. If you count all this time it's ~12 years.

Then surely Ron and Hermione would be horrible to him too?

I feel like more people know who the Dursleys are than know what a horcrux is

It came from Petunia. She thought anything magical was dangerous and freakish - and resented having to look after Harry both because of his magical parentage and the strain it put on her trying to appear to be a regular, middle-class muggle family.

That's a cool theory except for the fact that harry himself was the horcrux and didn't act like a horrible person so yeah
