My elementary had a thing where if you did good on test and participated you'd get merit point. Which you could cash in on school supplies. I remember getting a dumb pencil sharpener that I saved up for, i was proud of it.

In some states it is illegal to require students to pay for materials they need to learn in a public school. Maybe kids could just remember their #$%ing pencils.
