I pointed my telescope at Saturn, shot over 200,000 images, and processed the result … all to produce my finest look at the Jewel of our Solar System! A culmination of years of planetary photography work, this photo is from Aug 18, 2022, just days after our closest approach.

I took this photograph of the 2017 total solar eclipse. I’ve been revisiting it ever since and pushing it to the absolute extreme … revealing crazy details within the solar corona. It looks freaking amazing. But, let’s be honest, I am a bit biased in my opinion of this one 😂

This heavily software-processed image of the solar chromosphere reveals the complex nature of the magnetic field within our star. Walking the thin line between science and art ... perhaps blurring it a bit. 😉 #Astrophotography #space #solar #star #power

Last Friday, my astrophotographer friend asked if I wanted to collaborate on a monstrous mosaic image of the Sun. Yep! We both went to work, pulling out all the crazy details we could within the solar chromosphere. Enjoy a teaser … results so far are amazing!

Two years (and one day) ago, I was frantically setting up my telescope and cameras to capture a once in a lifetime event. This is a throwback look at the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in 2020.

I shot an image of some galaxies that are hundreds of millions of light years away with my backyard telescope. Exploring the mind-boggling, distant cosmos is everything I love about amateur astrophotography. This cluster is known as ARP297.

Here is a view of the “Eagle Nebula” shot with my backyard telescope system. The Pillars of Creation (made famous by the now-classic Hubble image), rise almost 5 light years into the interior pocket of the nebula … sculpted by gravity and the radiation of newborn stars.

M74 through the kaleidoscope of filters on the JWST Our eyes see a slice of the spectrum about 300nm wide (visible light). This image spans 19,000nm …63x the range of human vision! Is this what space looks like? Well, we just handed ourselves some superpower vision with JWST.

This is one of the most beautiful galaxy shots I’ve ever done. Though … I am entitled to my own opinions, 😜 This is IC342, a striking face-on spiral galaxy looming behind a veil of Milky Way stars and dust.   Our view out into the cosmos rarely gets better!

Here is a video of the Asteroid Dimorphos shot from my backyard, two weeks after the impact of NASA’s DART spacecraft. The visible ejecta plume (dust that was kicked up and blown back by the solar wind) stretches well over 10,000 km … roughly Earth’s diameter!

Tucked deep within the cavernous stellar nursery, Messier 16, this 10-light-year-long column of space dust rises into view. The “Dark Spire” is a small crop of a new image I’m working on featuring this entire star-forming region in high detail. Stay tuned!

Here’s my humble backyard attempt from last year in true colors. Seems almost comical to see them next to each other but … considering the budget 😂 Details on my version: Celestron EdgeHD 8” ZWO ASI1600MM Orion AtlasPro HaLRGB 24.1 hours total exposure

Some very raw footage from about an hour ago (morning of 17-May-2023) when the Moon passed in front of Jupiter. This occultation was captured in broad daylight through my telescope. I captured color info separately and will give this a proper process later. Enjoy a quick look!

The #Sun from Feb 27, 2021 AR2804 shows off its tangled magnetic field and sunspot that could swallow the Earth whole! Shot with a hydrogen filter that reveals the plasma in the #chromosphere. Photo was progressively enhanced to accentuate the contrasting structures. #space

Deep inside the Soul … IC1848, the Soul Nebula, is a nearby star forming region toward the constellation Cassiopeia. The young, hot stars carve out pockets and ionize the nearby gas clouds, causing them to glow in sculptured forms.

A low-res copy of this image is still getting passed around the internet credited as “NASA’s clearest image of the Sun”. Weird world we live in. If you enjoy my work, just share it with proper attribution, preferably a retweet. Feel free to ask questions and engage!

Located some 56 million light years away, M100 is a great example of a “Grand Design” spiral galaxy. This type is known for its long, structured arms which wrap around a bright inner core. A smaller companion can be seen edge-on at the top of this photo.

Check out this wild tornado-like prominence reaching out into space. It’s longer than 14 Earths placed side to side! 🌍🌎🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍🌎 We are set to officially release the full image tomorrow. Worth a look, I’d say.

This was hands-down my favorite celestial experience ever. It was nothing short of amazing. The streamers coming out from behind the Moon are parts of the solar corona blasting millions of miles out into space. This was shot on a standard DSLR, through a telephoto lens.

It’s totally doable but you really need specialized filtration or a literal fire can result. Here I am using a Daystar Quark filter with an auxiliary filter in front to reflect most sunlight back out the front of the scope.

Check out this amazingly detailed picture of the big spot on our star right now. I was able to get this shot with my backyard solar rig and an exceptional amount of patience. The 2nd image shows the Earth as a scale reference! #wow #amazing #Astrophotography #space #sun #star

The clouds were relentless, but I was gifted a few clear hours to do my best and preserve the moment. This was actually one day before they were closest together. During this time I shot a close-up from home, shot a scene at a local park, and found a perfect tree topper.

This is my best look at Mars this season…because it’s the only one. Opposition happens tonight on a full Moon occultation. This means the Sun, Earth, Moon, and Mars align in a VERY rare celestial event. Hoping for good skies even though the forecast is very bleak here! 🍻
