An upset gamer at PAX came to tell me about [GAME]'s recent launch, and how bad the CM was because of their non-explanations.
They calmed down a bit when I told them why I thought this was happening.
Here's why comm devs sometimes have to be vague/quiet about a subject!
1. Even we don't have answers 
Some bugs/delays/whatever take time and resources to explore. Sometimes the dev team literally has no clue why something's broken, or they have had no time to work on it.
We can't make up an answer to make you happy. That's even worse!
2. Legal issues 
We're all bound by contracts. It could range from anything like platforms or brand deals, but sometimes we literally can't tell you things because of LEGAL STUFF.
And we aren't allowed to say it's because of legal stuff either!!
3. We're scapegoats 
I've had to ban things because it made a dev/someone uncomfortable. Ppl then have come to me upset because I banned [thing].
To protect people's privacy, and to ensure THEY don't end up getting harassed, I put the ownness and blame on me.
4. We've been told to say it 
CMs don't tend to hold high powered positions/decision making positions on teams.
Sometimes we're told to say something even when we fight back on it.
5. You're not the only one 
At any point, if you've complained about some aspect of a game, or youre mad about something, we've heard it repeated a hundred times from other players.
We try to respond to every (constructive) complaint, but it's tough to keep up!
6. The explanation sucks 
Look, sometimes devs will code a game, ship it, learn of a bug and... oh no. Fixing it will require MONTHS of work with unjustified/unclear pay-offs, or it's legit so broken it won't work.
But ppl don't want to hear that or it's too complicated to.
6.5. No seriously, it's complicated Sometimes if we try and explain why something can't be fixed, we'd need to reveal private finances, biz stuff, etc. Fixes are rarely standalone problems. They're often wrapped up in a myriad of problems that are too complicated to explain!
I hope that gives a bit of insight into why communication can be hard. Of course it varies on the situation, and this is a vague blanket thread about possible reasons.
Bottom line: Devs WANT you to enjoy their game!! No dev is TRYING to make you hate them!
I’m this gamer but I don’t target CMs I just scream the dev company’s name in anger until I get over it...this can take hours.
