My kids are 12 and 5 and they can repeat my big lesson to them “be mindful of the work you leave for someone else.” It doesn’t matter who that someone else is - me or a stranger, your actions affect other people.

Grandma, pointing to the messy counter in the restaurant restroom: “Why don’t you clean that up while I use the toilet?” Me: “I didn’t make that mess.” Grandma (as only a grandma can): “I don’t believe I asked who made the mess.” To this day, I wipe down restroom counters.

I was picking up once when my director said "You don't need to do that. Custodial will get it." I said "They're not getting extra for this mess. Besides- there's no job I'm too good to do." He had no comeback; I kept cleaning. Didn't change him. Better yet, didn't change me.

True story: I used to be a janitor for a building that had a big end-of-the-fiscal-year working party at the end of September. Last year, it was on a weekend. I left them big trash cans by their food tables, I left them trash bags (1/2)

I used to have to routinely order food in for my bosses for conferences and meetings. My rule was if the receptionist had to receive it, and smell the delicious food, then she got some, too. Kindness and consideration towards everyone in the office should be the rule.

I was an exec asst in the C suite of a major medical center. Monday, the 10 of them had a lunch staff meeting, the gals didn’t take a lunch, we were in on the lunch order. Then to save money they cut out our 3 lunches. Billion $ budget but cut our lunches.

I’m proud to say we are extremely respectful of the lady who takes care of us. Last Christmas, our organization chipped in and gave her $400 as a little thank you, and we always clean up after ourselves because we don’t want to disrespect her.

More companies/ organizations need to do this - acknowledge and reward the "invisible" workers that keep their offices running.
