We can't quibble over this anymore. Saying that ICE is dangerous and violates people's basic human rights and right to due process isn't a partisan stance. It is an evidenced-based understanding that we all need to begin operating with.

Under the Trump administration, the agency has been unleashed, given more money, more authority, and more discretion to harm immigrant communities.https://rewire.news/article/2018/05/02/new-ice-age-agency-unleashed/ …

Trump's executive order essentially made everyone in the U.S. without authorization deportable, INCLUDING DACA recipients, who can get funneled into deportation proceedings for having a tattoo (and being accused of gang membership):https://rewire.news/article/2017/02/21/trumps-smart-strategic-immigration-approach-everyone-deportable/ …

Also under Trump, we see ICE partnering wither other federal immigration agencies to target immigrants who've been in the U.S. for decades. Y'all remember Operation Janus, a collaboration between the DOJ, ICE, and USCIS to denaturalize people?https://rewire.news/article/2018/01/09/justice-department-revokes-naturalized-citizenship-citing-fingerprint-issue/ …

I was able to confirm that ICE and USCIS communicated prior to his detainment and when folks working with Samuel told USCIS Samuel was fearful he was being targeted by ICE, USCIS still insisted he had to go to his appointment.https://rewire.news/article/2019/03/25/exclusive-immigration-agencies-communicated-prior-to-arrest-of-sanctuary-leader/ …

ICE continues to target people in sanctuary, hitting them with fines for hundreds of thousands of dollars, because they are fighting back against being deported to their deaths:https://rewire.news/article/2019/07/05/sanctuary-leaders-fight-back-against-ices-psychological-violence-and-steep-fines/ …

Immigrants continue to die in ICE custody, including the most vulnerable. These are trans asylum seekers like Roxsana Hernández and Johana Medina Leon, who ICE released from custody as she was in critical condition at the hospital:https://rewire.news/article/2019/06/06/the-details-of-johana-medinas-detainment-and-death-matter/ …

We know these human rights abuses are longstanding. They are systemic. They are intentional. They are part of how ICE operates. These impending raids are intended to terrorize people, and there is a precedent for this.

President Obama also targeted newly-arrived immigrants with raids. A few days into 2016, ICE targeted families who arrived in the United States in 2014.https://rewire.news/article/2016/01/05/ice-arrests-121-migrants-raids-targets-central-american-families/ …

We later learned that everyone targeted was Central American, and that the "families" targeted comprised of all women and children. This is how our country chose to respond to the humanitarian crisis at the border in 2014.

So, if you're ever curious about why immigrant communities call for the abolishment of ICE, you know why.https://rewire.news/article/2018/09/18/abolishice-is-not-a-slogan-its-a-call-to-action/ …

ICE formed in 2003. We have lived in a world before ICE, and there are very real reasons why immigrant communities advocate for the end of the agency. Their communities have been under attack for 16 years.

I've interviewed parents who have been detained and targeted for deportation. Something they have told me a lot is that they wished they had a plan for their children and their families in case they were targeted by ICE.

There is a lot of information circulating right now about how to keep communities safe. If you think it would be useful for me to circulate that, I would be happy to. But that is one practical bit of advice I can offer, directly from impacted people: Have a plan.

Have hard conversations with your children about what may happen, and have a plan for their care should you be taken.
