3. But that's a false binary. If race isn't a biolgical reality, then research that argues it is (looking at you Charles Murray and Nicholas Wade), and concludes regimes of inequality are justified is the equivalent of flat-eartherism. That's not an imposition of "orthodoxy."
4. The only reason racist pseudoscience like Murray and his ilk gets the benefit of the doubt is because for muich of their existence, universities have been racist structures which have produced and amplified racist ideas, giving them the veneer of academic respectability.
5. So contra Kennedy's argument in the CHE, the only reason he thinks that racism isn't the same thing as straight-up research fraud ("testing 5 and not 10," in his example) is that racism has been entrenched in our institutions so long it dresses like a scientist and has tenure.
6. The reason Kennedy can argue there's intellectual dishonesty and then there's "stuff people might think is racist but actually maybe not," and see those as distinct, is universities are structures where racism is embedded to the point where it's just part of the terrain.
As Althusser said, "Ideology never says 'I am ideological'." And that's the lens through which I read Kennedy's piece. An Ivy League dude mad at other Ivy League people for complicating his comfortably pat intellectual terrain shouldn't be read as anything more than that. /fin
Between this and the clickbait article about how professors teaching online should look professional, I am never reading CHE ever again.
