I’ve covered a lot of wars in the last 25 years and there is always a shoot more and shoot faster crowd - some proven right, others wrong. And they are seldom the ones who bear the responsibility for any consequences.

NASA (who studies impacts/the creation of craters on planetary bodies) was called to help understand what WOULD happen if we shot down the balloon over land
Quote Tweet
New this am: I’m told Jt Chiefs Chmn Gen Milley called NASA Administrator Bill Nelson personally to ask for NASA’s help in simulating debris fall if balloon was struck over US soil. NASA has capabilities on such calculations DoD does not and the agency provided help.

i assumed they’d wait until it was over the ocean to shoot it down bc (1) risk of debris if shot down over land, (2) public wanted it shot down eventually…but also (3) it wouldn’t escalate tensions with China bc they’d have already sent back the data they collected

Because it was traced back to China (and not somewhere closer) - and assuming that it’s pretty difficult to ensure a balloon like this will travel to a specific location…the theory that it was not intentional seems to hold weight

One question I have for stratospheric balloon experts - how difficult would it be to *intentionally* send a balloon like this from China to US. With wind, weather variability, and limited steering capability…it sounds difficult?

Uhm. Atmospheric layers can change like this??
Quote Tweet
NERD ALERT...the atmospheric heights will be SO LOW tonight, anyone living above 4,000 ft or so (hello top of Mount Washington) will be in a different atmospheric layer entirely, the stratosphere! This layer is typically 4-12 miles up, but tonight it will be less than a mile!

Here’s the important takeaway I’ve gleaned from this balloon Everyone does reconnaissance - us more than most. Generally it’s not totally unwelcome. It likely deescalates conflict & the probability of war. The invasion of air space + the fact that it’s so OBVIOUS is the issue

Another balloon from China spotted in Latin America. What is going on 🤔
Quote Tweet
New: Pentagon says another Chinese spy balloon is currently transiting Latin America. Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said in a statement to CNN, “We are seeing reports of a balloon transiting Latin America. We now assess it is another Chinese surveillance balloon.”

Why haven’t we shot down that balloon from China? This, perhaps, is the most important reason: we are also doing reconnaissance in other countries. Maybe even with balloons. If we shoot this down…what precedent does that set?

The balloon from China is moving eastward across US - spotted in Kansas City area (pictures below)
Quote Tweet
We have had several reports across northwest MO of a large balloon visible on the horizon. It is now visible from our office in Pleasant Hill and the KC Metro. We have confirmed that it is not an NWS weather balloon.

How big is the balloon from China? Officials say about 3 school buses in size. Definitely more on the professional end of High Altitude Balloons. So the question remains… was this really just a civilian balloon that flew off course as Chinese Foreign Ministry claims?

Why does it seem like SpaceX is always involved when it comes to UFO sightings nowadays? Because here in the US, they’re responsible for most of the rocket launches and satellites and those things often look like 🛸🛸🛸 I suspect we’ll hear about even MORE UFOs this year!

After a recent speech one of the organizers said I reminded her of the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and I've told every single person in my life that she said that because it's my favorite compliment I've ever received.

A “UFO” spotted in Hawaii 🌀 This video was captured by the Subaru Telescope on Jan 18 and is sped up about 50x. This would have been VERY weird/cool to see. 🚀

Offspring update, my baby is now almost as big as my 3.5 year old. Have babies with a giant they said. It’ll be fun, they said!
A picture of a 3 years old girl with her arm around a 1 year old boy. They are wearing matching striped shirts and sitting on the dining room floor looking at the camera. The girl is smiling big with her head tilted looking slightly above the camera.

Did you know that a single company owns HALF of all operational satellites in space? Starlink satellites are reported to deorbit within 5 years, but the overall topic of Space Debris is of crucial importance as more people launch more stuff into space. 🛰️

Someone who follows me online called my parents home in West Virginia and it probably goes without saying, but please don't do this. It's such an incredible invasion of privacy and puts my parents in an uncomfortable and unsafe position.
