I didn't realize it was such a common problem for women.

Many have it but the thing is that people don't necessarily look into it since it's "just hair". The autoimmune disease is crazy and for some it can lead to being completely hairless depending on how bad you have it.

Is anybody going to mention that “According to the American Academy of Dermatology, close to half of African-American women have experienced hair loss, which has been linked to certain styling practices that pull on the follicle, including braiding, weaves and chemical relaxing.”

That has absolutely nothing to do with alopecia, which is an autoimmune disease where the person's immune system attacks hair follicles as if it was a foreign body. Hair loss from pulling too much on it is completely unrelated.

4 years ago I stopped relaxing because I noticed the back of the ladies head in the choir was all thinning. Common denominator we all had relaxers. Now, my hair has grown back and is healthier.
