Of course, the lip syncing is just plain awful and wouldn't ever convince anyone in this particular example, but it's still a distressing prospect for the future. I'm sure the software will soon be better able to understand jaw structure and facial musculature.
Deepfakes are stepping up a notch. Now you can turn a *single* still photo of someone into a talking head, by supplying this AI with an audio file.

Honestly I wasn't impressed by the others in the article, either. IMO only those willing and eager to be deceived would credit them. But the rate of progress in this area is certainly very impressive, so it won't be long until they are higher quality.

It doesn’t have to be convincing enough to convince most people. Just one really deranged person who is unhinged for bad stuff to happen.

You would be stunned by how low the threshold for "realism" is for people who are unaware that they are looking at is a 3d rendering. It is much harder to get human faces right but if the majority of the face is real then people will be sucked in with ease.

In addition to the geopolitical and courtroom concerns, I'm particularly worried as a parent about the ramifications of this tech in regard to teen bullying. Spread a fake of some poor kid... even if everyone knows it's fake... pretty damaging.
