http://jewishvirtuallibrary.org/rothenburg-ob- … The story of this town is not unique, btw. It's a pretty good case study of Medieval European antisemitism.

Of course, I don’t have a solid family history because of all the moving around and then assimilation decades in the US, lots has gotten lost—just a few stories here and there on each side.

My Ruttenberg ancestors and most of my other ones somehow made it to the Pale of Settlement—a big chunk of Eastern Europe where Jews were forced to live under the Czar. (5 million or so Jews, I think). We did not have citizenship. We were mostly not allowed to live outside it.

There were a lot of devastating pogroms and anti-Jewish riots there; the Tsar stoked the “blame the Jews, not me” classic antisemitic approach quite a bit. Mostly we lived in poverty. Periodically there were additional restrictions, like the May Laws.

My family mostly came to the US in the late 19th c., running from pogroms & the like. One grandfather was conscripted to the Russian army as cannon fodder (they did that to the Jews a lot—they’ll either be dead or converted to Christianity by the end).He deserted & got to the US.

As far as I know, the United States is the first place my family ever has had citizenship and the legal protections that come with it. I only have one passport.

There are a lot of Jewish American stories. Jews who came to the US from Iraq or Iran or India or China or Yemen, or whose (non-Jewish) ancestors were brought forcibly by enslavers, or who survived Auschwitz, or who have one of a million other paths—they have their own stories.

What being a Jewish American—an American Jew—means to them may or may not be the same thing. People can speak for themselves. It’s also true that my own safety & freedom is the result of colonialism & the genocide of Indigenous Americans. I don’t know how to square that circle.

But goddammit, my nationality is American. My religion is Judaism and I am part of the Jewish people. But I am also American. And yeah, I’m having a feeling about the fact that the white supremacist puppet of the current Russian Tzar seems to suggest otherwise.
