45% of gamers are female, however this statistic also includes stay at home moms playing candy crush. Only 8% of the smash community is female, and of that % only a small portion even has an interest in competing, and THATS O K! Being a minority doesn’t have to be bad!https://twitter.com/tictoc/status/1080860735817875463 …

Treat the women in the community with respect. Absolutely. But don’t always assume that our minority status is a direct result of some big bad patriarchal boogeyman.

          A. From basically the creation of video gaming, men took an inclination towards the hobby more so than women, resulting in video game companies targeting a male audience. Thus, video gaming became a “male hobby” It became a vicious cycle.

          B. Men are statistically more competitive in arenas like competitive gaming. Why? Dunno. There’s many theories, but nothing concrete yet. I personally find myself being more competitive than most women when it comes to games/sports.

Can’t it be both? Like I really don’t understand how like there’s people on one side saying it’s only bc the patriarchy keeping us down and people on the other side (like you) saying it’s bc of biological and sociological reasons. IMO, I think both factors are at play personally

It can be both for sure, but what bothers me is the wildly skewed statistic.

Yeah I see what your saying. I just feel denying stuff like the patriarchy & privilege is like denying climate change. I will add tho that I agree with you a lot bc I think a big factor is just that us & men are biologically different & raised differently.

I think the being raised differently is a HUGE factor. Almost every competitive women I know grew up with a big brother playing video games (myself included)

Yeah people seem to think the only reason there are less girls than guys playing games is because guys will like harass them out of the general community. Like what? Most guys who game would love a girlfriend who also likes games. I dont get it.

I think the real reason is because less girls find games appealing than guys do. Don't see anyone asking why more girls go to salons than guys. Should be you know, fucking obvious!
