Now that Trump ridiculed Baltimore over its murder rate, a parade of columnists are going to pillory him for showing contempt for Real Americans, their concerns, and their way of life, right? My new piece, on the very deep imbalance this reveals:https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/08/02/rally-trump-seethes-with-elite-contempt-real-americans/?utm_term=.d5939e91e795 …

It could be because their votes count more than those in more populous coastal areas. (Senate, Electoral College.)

Midwestern whites are constantly seen as “real Americans” and the “norm.” I don’t understand it because the vast, vast majority do not live in these areas. Most journalists don’t even come from these areas and don’t know what they are taking about. It’s so odd.
-
It’s not even just that, they focus on Midwestern, white, rural, conservatives. It’s part of the fetishization of the idea of “real Americans” fitting that box when the reality is even in the Midwest most people live in or around cities.

Because all that matter are swing states.

What annoys me is this ridiculous canard about Iowa and New Hampshire voters being the most important.

Excellent column. And the reason for the over-representation of the mid-Western voter could be 2-fold: implicit bias and the electoral college.

I am uncomfortable to say I'm a white Midwestern, actually embarrassed. It's ok where I live in Indianapolis, but I was born/raised in South Bend. When I visit, especially the rural areas, I am appalled and I am angry! I actually cried. It wasn't vile before Trump spawned magats.
