It's very hard to see an infrastructure deal happening. Dems told Trump today that any pay-for must come from making tax code more progressive. And Trump long ago sold out the economic populism that might have made that possible. @paulwaldman1 and me:https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/04/30/democrats-offer-trump-an-infrastructure-deal-that-isnt-going-happen/?utm_term=.054cb183427c …

We do need some sort of infrastructure work done and soon, though. I mean, as is 1/5 of the bridges out there are ready to fall down. I travel over two bridges driving to work every day. Ergo if I am doing my math right I have a 20% chance of dying every morning.

I'd prefer to remove that chance of falling to my death every morning if possible. I live near Philly - the other drivers on the road are bad enough.

Why have political reporters suddenly forgotten about the idea of "message votes"? Republicans will never agree to a minimum wage increase either, but Democrats are still pushing it. And they should.

So stupid. Get the infrastructure deal, THEN deal with the tax code. This isn't an either-or scenario, but they're making it that way. Dems don't put up a fight on military increases and no one asks how THAT will be paid for.

That would be unwise. The tax code would not become more progressive. More likely is cutting budgets for healthcare, education, science, planned parenthood. The latest tax bill already clipped the governments wings when it comes to the ability to invest in infrastructure.

Or they could abandon their 'pay for' mentality. FDR didn't ask 'Do we have enough money in the budget to 'pay for' this war?'- That's ridiculous- it should be green infrastructure anyway- high voltage lines, high speed rail, EV charging. GOP voters want these, too.
