  1. Hard to overstate how damning this is to Senate Rs (not that they care). We now know there are redacted OMB emails that discussed the *purpose* of Trump's freeze on military aid. Yet Senate Rs are denying the country the opportunity to see them.

  2. Small correx: Trump ordered Bolton to call Zelensky and pressure him to work w/Giuliani on the scheme. Key: This underscores how directly involved Trump was in running the whole plot and in coordinating Rudy's acts -- *and* in corruptly placing the government at its disposal.

  3. This is really important, from the new NYT scoop: Pat Cipollone, who is leading the White House impeachment defense, is now directly implicated as a fact witness.

  4. BREAKING: Trump *directly* enlisted John Bolton in his efforts to pressure Ukraine, ordering him to call Zelensky and deliver Trump's corrupt demand, NYT reports. This happened in May. This scrambles the known timeline, as notes.

  5. * Trump says his extortion of Ukraine was "perfect" * Trump said in media's faces Ukraine must investigate Bidens * Trump solicited more foreign interference on national TV * Rudy kept up Ukraine scheme during Trump's impeachment Now Trump is unbound:

  6. .'s position acknowledges Trump's corruption while helping to carry Trump's coverup of that corruption to completion. It's a betrayal. It leaves the country exposed and adrift, in the dark about what Trump is prepared to inflict on us.

  7. Trump's stance isn't really that his conduct was justifiable. That's irrelevant to him. It's that he did nothing for which he should be held accountable. With this validated, there's zero doubt he'll now wield the government against rivals in worse ways.

  8. GOP argument: * We've already heard enough witnesses, so we don't need to hear from the one with the most direct knowledge of Trump's central act * We'll acquit, b/c Ds failed to produce testimony from anyone with direct knowledge of Trump's central act

    Prikaži ovu nit
  9. It's an absolute outrage that GOP Senators are empowering Trump to dictate who *they* hear testimony from. Every Democrat, and everyone else, should repeat this over and over in every conceivable forum: A rigged trial can only produce a sham acquittal.

  10. Keeping score: 1) Bolton privately warned Congress something nefarious happened w/Yovanovitch 2) WH is blocking Bolton's book, claiming "significant amounts" of classified info -- likely meaning BIG revelations 3) Senate Rs are helping Trump ensure we never hear from Bolton

  11. Wow! John Bolton privately told Rep Eliot Engel -- unprompted! -- that the House should look into the recalling of Yovanovitch, "He strongly implied that something improper had occurred...Bolton has made clear over the last few months that he has more to say on this issue."

  12. Media accounts are not clearly conveying that a Senate vote against new witnesses is a vote to complete *Trump's* coverup. It's a vote to *never* hear these witnesses. Trump is *explicitly* demanding that GOP Senators rig his trial to his specifications.

  13. Trump's whole defense -- that he only froze military aid to Ukraine out of concern over corruption -- rests on disinformation. If we don't concede to Trump the power to make lies into truths through sheer repetition, the entire superstructure collapses.

  14. Incredibly, Trump’s team is now arguing that we don’t need to hear from John Bolton on the grounds that Trump has offered the last word on their conversation. We don’t need to hear new witnesses and evidence because the truth is what Trump says it is.

  15. The notion that Senate Republicans were “blindsided” by Bolton’s revelations is a sick joke. They always knew what Bolton would tell us — which is *exactly why* they have opposed hearing his testimony so aggressively. The coverup blew up in their faces.

    Prikaži ovu nit
  16. 1) Trump's defense is that no one who has testified heard him link military aid to investigations 2) Trump won't allow testimony from the very people who discussed this matter directly with him 3) Thus, not hearing from them is a coverup *by definition*

    Prikaži ovu nit
  17. There's a perverse irony at the core of the lies Trump's team is telling. Joe Biden worked for years to root out corruption in Ukraine. Trump not only didn't care a whit about corruption; he himself was thoroughly corrupt in his dealings with Ukraine.

  18. 4) As reports, GOP Senators will say Trump's denials are enough of a reason not to hear from Bolton. This amounts to arguing there's no need for witnesses for the sole reason that the truth is what Trump says it is. No one should sugarcoat this.

    Prikaži ovu nit
  19. 3) It's likely Trump's legal team got Bolton's manuscript in advance. This means it's likely they knew exactly how Bolton would incriminate Trump -- and that this is exactly why they're blocking him from testifying.

    Prikaži ovu nit
  20. 2) The Bolton news demolishes a key Trump defense. Trump's team keeps saying the only witnesses WHO TESTIFIED deny any link between aid and investigations. Bolton has now confirmed he would testify otherwise -- which is EXACTLY WHY he's being blocked:
