The problem with A.I. is it learns from it's mistakes...so basically the only way to advance self driving cars is to have them kill people

Well, no. Google feeds the AI hours of footage of a human driving, and the AI mimics it on the road. They also give it a certain set of guidelines, like "don't hit stuff." No one has to die for AI to advance.
