The game plays almost entirely normal, but when the player got to the special stage & collected the first emerald, it seemed to be an eerie & mysterious black emerald with scattered particles instead of the casual, colorful blue emerald you'd see in the first special stage.

When the results came up, it cut to a black screen with a mysterious figure having an animal skull for it's head saying to the player:
