Seven years ago #OTD, our Very Long Baseline Array telescope caught a glimpse of the signal from @NASAVoyager 1's transmitter (from a distance of more than 11 billion miles away!). The slightly oblong shape is a result of the #VLBA antenna configuration. 📷NRAO/AUI/NSFpic.twitter.com/JIHFqlesQE

In a complementary observation, the @GreenBankObserv also detected Voyager 1's signal -- the most distant, human-built object in space -- picking it out from the background radio noise in less than one second.pic.twitter.com/MFxulObMFA

What's astounding is that Voyager 1's main transmitter emitted only 22 watts, which is equivalent to a car-mounted police radio or — in visible light — a refrigerator light bulb.

Though weak by the standards of modern wireless communications, Voyager’s signal was amazingly bright when compared to most natural objects studied by radio telescopes.https://public.nrao.edu/news/vlba-spots-voyager-1/ …

          Replying to @TheNRAO @NASAVoyager and

What kind of shift in the frequency do you see from the speed Voyager is travelling at?
